
Alberta e-bike regulations
- Output cannot exceed 500 W
- Cannot assist beyond 32 km/h
- Required equipment includes head/tail lamps, reflectors, brakes and horn
- Fully operable pedals are required
- No driver’s license, vehicle insurance, or vehicle registration is required
- Approved bicycle or motorcycle helmet required
- Operators must be 12 years of age or older
- Is capable of being propelled by muscular power
- Has one of the following safety features
(i) an enabling mechanism to turn the electric motor on and off that is separate from the accelerator controller and fitted in such a manner that it is operable by the driver, or
(ii) a mechanism that prevents the motor from being engaged before the bicycle attains a speed of 3 km/h
- Bears a label that is permanently affixed by the manufacturer and appears in a conspicuous location stating, in both official languages, that the vehicle is a power assisted bicycle

Alberta ebike regulations identifies e-bikes as “power bicycles” and is consistent with the federal definition of “power-assisted bicycle” in MVSR CRC, c 1038 s 2. Motor output must not exceed 500 W (0.671 hp) and e-bike is incapable of providing further assistance when the electric bicycle attains a speed of 32 km/h on level ground. Fully operable pedals are required. No driver’s license, vehicle insurance, or vehicle registration is required. Operators must be 12 years of age or older. All operators are required to wear a motorcycle helmet meeting the standards set in AR 122/2009 s 112(2) Or, an approved bicycle helmet (Vehicle Equipment Regulation, Section 112). A passenger is permitted only if the e-bike is equipped with a seat designated for that passenger a horn is required as standard
Equipment: You must be equipped with the following gear when riding a power bicycle: headlamp, tail lamp, reflectors, brakes, and a horn. (Vehicle Equipment Regulation, Sections: 10, 13, 50, 54, and 60.) Note: that power bicycles no longer require a brake lamp or a side mirror.
